IMMC Hosts Day of Dignity Event with Islamic Relief

Jackson, MS, September 16, 2023 – In a successful collaborative effort, the International Museum of Muslim Cultures (IMMC) Beloved Community Project joined hands with Islamic Relief USA for the "Day of Dignity" event that took this Saturday, September 15, 2023. This initiative aimed to support students, low-income families, and those experiencing housing instability. The "Day of Dignity" successfully offered assistance to almost 200 community residents.

Islamic Relief USA has been at the forefront of the annual "Day of Dignity" campaign for decades, extending assistance to marginalized communities nationwide. Millions of individuals face daunting challenges, including unemployment and underemployment, limited access to healthcare, food insecurity, and a lack of essential resources. Additionally, Jackson, Mississippi, grappling with these hardships is further compounded by a persistent water crisis and a lower national education ranking.

The "Day of Dignity" campaign was dedicated to supporting the people of Jackson by distributing nonperishable food items, bottled water, school supplies, backpacks, hygiene kits, and hand sanitizers, providing healthcare screenings, and conducting an on-site raffle where 20 bicycles were awarded to lucky recipients. The event occurred at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Jackson MS. The Beloved Community's mission was to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people it served, and the "Day of Dignity" underscored the belief that every individual deserves access to essential goods and quality care.

IMMC's Deputy Executive Director, Lina Ali, said, "This collaboration with Islamic Relief for the 'Day of Dignity' event was a profound expression of solidarity. It showed the incredibly positive and uplifting work of the Muslim community in Jackson coming together to support hundreds of Ward II residents. This event reaffirms our commitment to ensuring dignity for all. IMMC wants to thank our Beloved Community volunteers and partners for their efforts in making this campaign a success."

This event, which was open to the public, successfully provided essential items to almost 200 community residents. IMMC's Beloved Community program is proud to have demonstrated the fundamental need to instill dignity into the lives of all Jacksonians.
