VISION AND MISSION

The International Museum of Muslim Cultures is a 501c (3) non-profit organization that promotes multiculturalism, pluralism, diversity, equity, and human dignity. The museum is open to all people and respects the diversity of its visitors.

Our vision is to be a multifaceted institution that presents Muslim perspectives through the influence of Islamic civilization and its contributions to the world.

Our mission is to be America’s first Museum dedicated to educating the American Public about Muslim history and culture. By presenting diverse Islamic cultural histories and contributions and serving as an educational resource for teaching global consciousness, historical literacy, and multicultural appreciation. By facilitating multicultural and interfaith dialogue to promote understanding; and reduce religious, cultural, and racial bigotry. Our goal is to advance America’s religious and civic discussion and build bridges for cross-racial and religious healing, justice, and human dignity for all.

For more than twenty years, the International Museum of Muslim Cultures has illuminated Islamic history and Muslim culture from ancient times to the present, offering intellectually engaging programs and educational exhibitions for people of all ages and backgrounds.

BACKGROUND And HISTORY
THE INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM OF MUSLIM CULTURES

In December 2000 a group of Jackson, Mississippi Muslims identified the need for the development of a local museum to educate the public about Islamic history and culture and the contributions of Muslims to world civilization.

With the hard work and dedication of co-founders Mrs. Okolo Rashid and Mr. Emad Al-Turk and a steering team of national and international scholars, experts, and community members, the Museum opened in April 2001 with a major exhibition, Moorish Spain: Its Legacy to Europe and the West as part of The Majesty of Spain, an international exhibition at the Mississippi Arts Pavilion in downtown Jackson’s Arts District. The museum attracted over 2,000 visitors in its first month of operation and continues to be a pioneer in sharing the beauty and majesty of the world’s Muslim cultures.

The museum has been endorsed by local, state, and national elected officials, units of government, and educational institutions. The museum has received substantial media coverage since the museum’s inception in early 2001.
